The Titan (2018)

The Titan is a low budget but kind of interesting sci-fi movie just recently placed on Netflix as one of their original offerings. It stars Sam Worthington, who is clearly slumming, and Taylor Schilling of Orange is the New Black.

Set in the midst of an apocalyptic time where the Earth is dying and humanity is on the brink of collapse, this movie involves a secret government program to genetically modify a group of volunteers in order to make them physically capable of withstanding the rigors of planet Mars. The idea is that they don't have time to make Mars safer for humans, so instead they are going to adapt the humans for Mars. As you might expect, many things go wrong.

The performances here are pretty good, as they did hire some decent actors who have done bigger things. It's just that the movie itself comes off almost like an extended X-Files episode and it's all quite predictable. The ending has some cool parts, but as a whole it's one too many "What's happening to me?!?!" scenes coupled with a little bit of action and some creepiness. It's neither a horror movie nor an action movie when it should have been one or the other.

In the end, The Titan makes for a rainy afternoon distraction for science fiction fans and it's less than two hours long.
